ORAL EXPRESSION - TEF CANADA
Total Duration: 15 minutes
- Section A: 5 minutes
- Section B: 10 minutes
Format:
- The test takes place face-to-face with an examiner (role play).
- It is recorded for double evaluation purposes.
- You are not given any preparation time beforehand.

Section A – Requesting Information
Objective:
- To obtain information from an announcement or a short document.
Format:
- You play a role (e.g., a client interested in an activity).
- The examiner plays the respondent who provides the answers.
- The interaction lasts 5 minutes.
Tasks to accomplish:
- Read the provided announcement.
- Ask 10 varied questions about the document (location, price, schedule, accessibility, etc.).
- React if information is unclear or incomplete.
- Use a formal or polite tone (e.g., use “vous”).
- Use connectors to link your questions (e.g., Then…, If I understood correctly…, I have another question…).
Language:
- Form complete sentences.
- Avoid overly casual or vulgar language.
- Use a varied vocabulary (avoid repetition or overly simple sentences).
Tips:
- Don’t censor yourself: no question is silly.
- Don’t hesitate to ask about missing information.
- It’s allowed to ask for clarifications.
- Don’t panic if you don’t fully understand the activity: behave as you would in a real situation.
Section B – Persuading Someone to Join an Activity
Objective:
- Convince someone to participate in an activity or event.
Format:
- Proposed situation: e.g., convincing a friend to attend a festival.
- Direct interaction with the examiner (role play).
- Lasts 10 minutes.
Tasks to accomplish:
- Clearly present the activity.
- Provide logical and detailed arguments.
- Respond to the examiner’s counterarguments.
- Conclude the conversation naturally.
Language:
- Use rich and appropriate vocabulary.
- Form complex and varied sentences.
- Use correct grammar (verb tenses, sentence structure, etc.).
- Speak in a spontaneous and natural manner.
Tips:
- The examiner may pretend not to know the situation.
- You can include your personal experiences.
- A natural tone is encouraged, but avoid excessive humor or being too informal.
- Don’t stress: it’s just a role-play!
EVALUATION
Overall quality of speech :
Clarity, fluency, coherence of ideas.
Ability to convince or obtain information.
Reacting appropriately to the examiner’s input.
Language mastery :
Varied and appropriate vocabulary.
Correct syntax (verb tenses, linking sentences).
Clear and intelligible pronunciation
